Background of the Study
Sex education programs in secondary schools are designed to provide students with essential knowledge about human sexuality, reproductive health, and safe practices. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, these programs are critical in addressing issues related to adolescent health and behavior (Etim, 2023). Effective sex education is believed to promote informed decision-making, reduce the prevalence of risky behaviors, and contribute to overall well-being (Okon, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these programs is often contested due to cultural, religious, and social influences that may affect curriculum delivery and reception. This study assesses the effectiveness of sex education programs by evaluating student knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in relation to the information provided. It also considers the role of teacher competence, curriculum content, and community involvement in shaping program outcomes (Akanbi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of sex education programs in secondary schools in Ikom, students’ understanding and attitudes towards sexual health remain inconsistent (Etim, 2023). Cultural and religious factors often interfere with the effective delivery of these programs, resulting in gaps in knowledge and misconceptions (Okon, 2024). The lack of comprehensive evaluations of these programs further complicates efforts to improve them. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of sex education programs, addressing the need for evidence-based improvements to ensure that students receive accurate and practical sexual health information (Akanbi, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the current sex education curriculum and its delivery.
2. To assess students’ knowledge and attitudes towards sexual health.
3. To recommend enhancements to the sex education program.
Research Questions:
1. How effective are current sex education programs in Ikom schools?
2. What are students’ perceptions of the information provided?
3. What improvements can be made to enhance program effectiveness?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Effective sex education programs improve students’ sexual health knowledge.
2. Cultural influences significantly affect students’ attitudes towards sex education.
3. Enhanced teacher training leads to better program outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the effectiveness of sex education programs in Ikom, offering insights that can guide curriculum improvements and teacher training. The findings will help ensure that students receive accurate, culturally appropriate, and practical sexual health information, thereby contributing to better adolescent health outcomes (Etim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the effectiveness of sex education programs in secondary schools in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State. It does not include primary or tertiary education.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Sex education: Instruction that covers topics related to human sexuality and reproductive health.
2. Curriculum: The structured content and framework of educational programs.
3. Effectiveness: The degree to which the programs achieve desired educational outcomes.
